Exercise May Be the Best Medicine for Premature Ejaculation: Study
A new study suggests that exercise may be the best medicine for avoiding premature ejaculation.[0] The review, led by researchers from Anglia Ruskin University in the United Kingdom, looked at 54 studies involving 3,485 men.[1]
The results showed that physical activity was as effective as drugs, but without the associated side-effects.[2] In a study involving male individuals aged 18-45, 35 participants were instructed to run for at least 30 minutes daily for a period of 5 days per week, while the remaining individuals were told to walk for no more than 30 minutes each day for the same number of days.[1]
The findings showed that the men who ran lasted almost three times longer in bed, from an average of 26 seconds to around a minute and a half.[0] Another study found that carrying out pelvic floor exercises three times a day for three months increased latency time from a median of one minute to three minutes.[2]
Lead author Lee Smith, professor of public health at Anglia Ruskin University, said: “We know premature ejaculation is a common complaint among men worldwide.[1] The lack of a clear definition of what is or isn’t premature ejaculation has repercussions in terms of treatment, and there are relatively few effective drugs available.[3]
“This evidence is based on studies involving a small number of men, and we need more research in this area, but approaches like physical activity could help all men. This is not just for men diagnosed with premature ejaculation. Strategies for men to help them last longer in the bedroom could help improve their relationship with their partner and their self-esteem.”[1]
The findings were recently published in the journal Trends in Urology and Men’s Health.[2] Physical activity should be looked at as a potential strategy to help men improve their sexual performance, the authors of the review conclude.[4] Exercise is good for mental health, so it makes men less anxious about sex, allowing them to go on for longer.[5]
