The Story of Andy: Knowing the Warning Signs of Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic cancer is a deadly condition that can reveal itself in subtle and unexpected ways.[0] Knowing the warning signs is the first step in identifying the condition.[0] A case study led by Pancreatic Cancer UK tells the story of Andy, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the age of 50.[0]

Andy shared with Pancreatic Cancer UK that he first began to experience severe abdominal pains in late February but was told he may have gallstones.[0] After an ultrasound failed to find anything and cutting out fatty foods seemed to help, Andy began to notice his urine was very dark and his stools were pale and refused to flush.

Andy was eventually given a CT scan that revealed a tumor in the head of his pancreas.[0] Surgery was scheduled for him and he also underwent six months of chemotherapy to combat the tumour.[0]

Other symptoms of pancreatic cancer to note include loss of appetite or sudden weight loss, diarrhea or constipation, feeling tired or having no energy, feeling hot or shivery, and pain at the top part of the tummy and back. Additionally, jaundice can be a telltale sign of pancreatic cancer, in which the whites of the eyes or skin turn yellow, accompanied by itchy skin and dark-colored pee while the poo turns pale.

Early diagnosis is essential for treatment and Andy is happy to report that he continues to keep very good health and has even surpassed the five-year survival statistics.[0]
